For a change I thought I'd have beef for Christmas dinner. Hubby is vegetarian so I hardly ever cook meat. I need something simple for the remaining 4 of us - our two sons, Mum and me. I have no idea what cut to get or how much - advice would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Umm can I point out again - no Waitrose in this neck of the woods! Booths might be our nearest equivalent...
Booths have great meat and from memory their butchery counter staff are very helpful too.

Thanks all, some useful advice there :)
You have Booths? I am sooo jealous. We used to love shopping at Booths on holiday and would always bring some of their meat back
I'm green with envy too, have had fabulous steaks from Booths - Butchers adore having their brains picked (not literally of course).
Rib of beef for us this year from the local butcher
I always did Rib when we were all here, now tis just me I have had to adjust.
Just the two of us this year Mamya. Boxing day is the family day. What you having for Christmas day?
Not decided yet, have some dental work to come - might end up with soup lol.
I hope not Mamya. Good luck with the dental work. If it's all sorted treat yourself to a nice piece of fillet xxx
Certainly will.

Yup Woofgang, we have Booths but not in our town - it's about half an hour's drive away. I don't get there as often as I would like, but will def make an effort to go before Christmas.
8 lbs :-D That'd be only 2lbs each. You'd probably want more for cold cuts Boxing Day ;-)

Butchers adore having their brains picked ? Now that's an idea. How about picking brains for Xmas lunch ?
Wish I was competent cooking meat. If I can get something pre cooked Ill be happy, better still, everyone's happy with a buffet. I know, terrible.
Don't over complicate it. I'd keep the meat simple. If your hubby is veggie I'm sure you know lots of nice vegetable dishes.

Get yourself a meat thermometer. Couple of quid from Amazon...
I'd go for a kilo of boneless sirloin. I don't rate topside for a roast, especially on a special occasion.
