Week In Hand & Holdiay Pay
11 Answers
My husband works a job in which he has been paid a week in hand. We recently took 2 weeks holiday and yesterday was the first Friday back since our holidays, Friday is pay day. His employer has not paid him this week. Am I right in thinking that he should have been paid for the week's work he did prior to us going on holiday this pay day? The week he finished for holidays he was paid for the previous week he worked and then whilst on holiday he received two weeks holiday pay. Surely now he should have received payment for the week he worked leading up to our holiday? I am so confused, would appreciate anyone's knowledge on this. Many thanks

If your husband is an employee (rather than a self-employed contractor) he's entitled to 28 days paid leave every year (assuming that he works for either 5 or 6 days per week). If the two weeks holiday he's just taken formed part of that leave then there shouldn't be any gap in his pay at all.
I'll assume that he took his holiday for the fortnight after Fri 11 November. Then here's what should have happened:
Fri 11 Nov: Paid for week's work ending 4 Nov. (He's got that. No problems)
Fri 18 Nov: Paid for week's work ending 11 Nov. (That was the first of the two week's pay he received while on holiday, So, again, no problems)
Fri 25 Nov: Paid for week's holiday ending 18 Nov. (That was the second of the two week's pay he received while on holiday. Once again, no problems.)
Fri 2 Dec: Paid for week's holiday ending 25 Nov. (That seems to have gone missing! COMPLAIN!!!)

He is an employee, Buenchico, not self-employed. And my understanding of the situation was exactly how you and sunny-dave saw things. Thank you both for reassuring me that I am not going insane and miscalculated how things would be when we returned from holiday. Any missed pay is bad but missed pay this close to Christmas will be.....yeah you know how it is I'm sure, guys! Thanks for the replies! :)
As buenchico says this sunds odd if he is a salaried/waged employee.
Was he perhaps paid his holiday pay in advance (which some companies do) - i.e. paid for 3 weeks rather than 1 week on the Friday before he went.
The only possible reasons I can see are that he had already exhausted his entitlement or he was fairly new and hadn't yet earned sufficient holidays.
He needs to ask at work

He is a waged employee and has worked there for two years. He wasn't paid his holiday pay in advance - he received one week's wage the Friday that he finished and then his holiday pay was paid into our account each of the two Fridays that we were on hols. He had made sure that he had enough holiday entitlement before we booked so I really do think this is an error. I just wanted to make sure that my thinking on the matter was correct. I had a thought in the back of my mind that he somehow had lost his week in hand by taking holidays in the first place but you have all reassured me that this didn't happen. Will see what happens on Monday I guess! Thanks for the replies fiction-factory & cleggie. :)
