Disturbing details of the plane crash that killed the football team have emerged.
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/official-airline-was-warned-plane-barely-had-enough-fuel-for-flight-to-medellin/
The owner of the airline that provided the aircraft and the head of the flight safety bureau that allowed the plane to fly with insufficient fuel to make the flight were Father and Son!
The aircraft did not have the range to make the flight without a refueling stop, yet the safety bureau head approved it!!!
The 'Airline' has just one serviceable aircraft and has never operated scheduled flights !

The plane had enough fuel at the start of its journey to reach its destination, but had little in reserve. The plane was full with fuel, but it was a small aircraft and the lengh of its journey was at the maximum of its ability.

The airline is clearly at fault for not using a bigger aircraft or not making a refuel stop. Decisions, (bad ones) were made for money saving reasons, and the pilot being also an owner, compromised safety for profit.
This is not the safety obsessed (thank goodness in the case of aircraft) West.

They would have had enough fuel (just) if they had not circled, as pointed out above. Being small they probably never encountered issues getting into an airport so saw no issue this time.

Life is cheap and worth a gamble in some parts of the world still. That is all this is.
Thanks Ladybirder....there is something definitely change about this case, if what I found on your link is anything to go by.

Gromit it was the ONLY plane the 'airline' had.
The plane was fully fueled at the start of the flight.
But as said, the flight was at the very limit of the planes range. Any head wind or diversion would have seen it out of fuel.
Eddie....if that is true, then this was an accident waiting to happen. I presume manslaughter charges will be forthcoming ?
Question Author
^^ Exactly what I was thinking Mikey, looks like manslaughter to me.
But with a corrupt Government and huge bribes flying around it may not happen!
A manslaughter charge? In that part of the World?

We can but dream I suppose.

running out of fuel not a problem confined to 3rd world areas:-

the difference between landing safely or not in this case was simply the pilots not communicating effectively with the controllers.

Even stranger the pilot reported 'total electrical failure' but his radio was still working!
They don't seem to be learning from their mistakes Mush !
Question Author
mushroom, that Avincea flight was from Meddalin in Columbia the exact same city the football flight was heading to.It also failed to report a serious fuel shortage, a direct parallel situation.
