I guess lightoftruth you are talking from a musical / sociological perspective here? Personally, I prefer rock, because in common with anyone who doesn't appreciate and understand a spefici musical genre, in this case rap, it really does all sound the same! My major dislike of rap, and attraction to rock, is that rock is usually created by the musicians who perform it, whereas rap is usually the result of a massive team of back-room writers and producers with just the rapper and his ryhmes to top it off.
I could spend all day, and all tomorrow telling you which rock bands i like, and why, but for rap, it comes down to Emenem and Dre, who are a killer team.
Rock (indie specifically) win it for me. Cant beat a bit of guitar and a powerful male voice. Rock produces songs that will last for decades whereas rap can only get more and more outdated. I cannot relate to rap at all, the commercial stuff is catchy, as mentioned Dre and Eminem are listenable (alost enjoyable) and Kanye West produces some high street rap that my 4 yr old loves.
I don't really stick to one genre of music. It's fair to say that I listen to more Rock music than I do Rap, but I still apreciate the importance of Rap. Not only is it something original (well, it was when it first sprung about) in the world of music, but the fusion of Rap with other styles (Rock included) has played a major part in a lot of bands music. Bands such as "Rage Against The Machine" and "Red Hot Chili Peppers" would sound a lot different if it weren't for Rap.
I don't think I do miss the point SarCaustic - the question was quite clear - rock v. rap, your thoughts - which I duly expressed, giving reasons for my opinions. I'm not discussing the principles behind music, I'm explaining my personal point of view about why I prefer rock to rap. If lightoftruth had asked about the princples of music, and what constitues 'good' music, that's a totally different avenue of thought.
Sidetracking is the path to deletion on the AB, so i try and stay within the bounds of the Question.
I have to say that i love both Genres but i do feel Rap gets a hard time mainly cos of the rubbish that people have to listen to if they are a daytime radio listener. A lot of the great Rap acts/artists have never been played or heard by the majority of people. Rap is a brilliant and pretty clever genre i think and its all too easy to say like Fender62 has that it is just a rant to drum machines and samples! I think that there is a little bit more to it than that ! To use a sample you have to have a pretty extensive knowledge of music in the first place and Rap was the Pioneer of this and so many other things as well. Many Rap stars are very intelligent and dont just rhyme about bitches either thats a bit of a sweeping statement like saying all rock music is about the Devil and the Occult utter rubbish! Dre is a legend without a doubt and was there at the beginning as part of the World Class Wrecking Crew so he is a Pioneer but hes not alone there are dozens more who are even more legendary such as Afrika Bambataa, Kool Herc,Grandmaster Flash, Herbie Hancock, Rick Rubin, Russell Simmons and the list goes on.
Sorry to go on but it annoys me when people slate something that they dont understand and dont know anything about other than what they have heard on the Radio! Its been going since the late 70's and it shows no sign of stopping and i think i am right when i say that it is the biggest and fastest growing musical genre out there at the moment! and for any Aerosmith fans out there dont forget Run Dmc saved their flagging careers!
