Crowd funding is getting small amounts of money from a large number of people via the internet. In this instance, they have got 5000 people to donate £35. The demographic of crowd funders is usually wealthy internet savvy professionals, and not 'travelling people'.
People making the donations are voluntarily giving money. Unlike Mrs May who is wasting my tax money on a worthless appeal whether I like it or not.
