Leave EU co-founder and UKIP donor Aaron Banks has challenged Mary Beard on the reasons behind the fall of the Roman Empire (immigration apparently).

Who's opinion do you think carries more weight here?

By the way, a big bravo to Mr Banks for standing his ground against Ms Beard....I look forward to him tweeting Delia Smith, to critique her flapjacks.

skirts? the Spartans in 300 were near to naked as it gets. Though I have heard it suggested that the film may not be factually unassailable.
yes, Banks is talking out of his plaster I'm afraid.
TTT...another occasion when we are of one mind !
Mary Beard is a lifelong historian and has produced reams of original research and publications on the history of Rome. Indeed, her body of work is significant enough to have shaped the field.

Really all that she was saying was that Banks was oversimplifying and that his example wasn't applicable to today for lots of reasons. Not complicated, and not particularly controversial.

The idea that people are going to side with a hobbyist rather than someone who produces original research on the topic is depressing and laughable. I never thought the British public would be so dismissive of book learning.
// I don't know what you mean by treatment of the Goths.//

we have had quite a bright ( for AB) thread on this earlier this year
basically someone was asking whether " a slave for a dog" deal was the one that led the visigoths to raid and sack rome in erm when they did

the Goths were stopped at the border and starved so some bright spark ( _ Roman General ) said OK give us a goth as a slave and we will give you a dog to eat

The goths invaded - defeated the general and sacked Rome

The discussion came up with letting the masses land in Greece or Italy or let them drown last summer.....

The thread was marked with contribution from 3T
" let the babies drarn ! who give a flying frack ? "
and others quoting the original Latin text - not vetuste he was busy making smart ossed comments about it all.

interesting point

[ the above comment was about whether the really crap treaty with the goths led directly to the sack of rome ]
Oh I would Kromo
I can understand Banks making the comparison - it suits his political agenda - but I dare say it goes so far no further : so to take it up with an expert in the subject is a bit daft. But then, this sort of nonsense is replicated in lots of places by lots of people.

love it!
As a fellow Mensan, I know Mary and she is a Legend on Roman History.
is this another Brexit thread ?

as in - it has taken place and is done and dusted
but we discuss it as tho it is to take place in the future

can someone post an URL please of the discussion

- if it has occurred - she would have taken him apart for chrissakes
she is a Latinist ( for 3T - that is someone who reads Latin a lot )

and all Aron would know would be gleaned from the colour film of Fall of the Roman Empire 1964 - the one with Diana Dors as Delicia and Victor Mature as one of the many emperors. It was that one that Groucho Marx commented "I never watch a film if the man's tots are bigger than the woman's"

The Spartans - the film was digitally enhanced - Hugh Thingey doesnt have abs like that in real life. They were sort of pasted on. as for his thingey - I erm dont know about that - this is after all a fambly thread
I know PP, I'm in Mensa
