I did not realise but apparently I have frequently mentioned the Birds Trifle I used to have as a boy. We spent Christmas with my daughter and grandchildren and at Christmas tea-time with much ceremony and as a complete surprise I had my trifle delivered. Made with a lot of love it was marvelous.
Several Christmases ago I made an 'Italian trifle' using panettone soaked in Limoncello, ricotta cheese, cream and flaked almonds. I used far too much Limoncello and it was very alcoholic. It was divine!
My first year of marriage I made a trifle for my Mum and Dad's Christmas visit, in my best glass bowl. Got as far as sponge jelly etc and left it to set. Christmas Eve went to office party (them were the days) got drunk, went home made Birds custard poured it straight onto to the jelly - you can imagine what happened. When it had cooled I decorated the top and put a cake frill around the bowl. Everybody remarked what a delicious trifle it was.
