Bad Bananas
38 Answers
I can't seem to find a good banana anywhere lately. I usually get mine from Tesco or Sainsburys. Yesterday I bought a small bag from Co- op, as the loose ones looked horrible. They looked ok in bag and I felt pleased with myself. When I had one yesterday it felt soft and as I pealed it it was rotten all through. Tried another, the same! Has anyone else experienced this. Oh for a decent banana!

Seriously I seem to remember reading that there was a banana virus that was destroying the crop and in danger of wiping out all banana plantations world wide. On account that the main crop now on sale was derived from a very narrow gene pool of stock. I am being serious there.
I must say Patsy that we have noticed that they seem not to keep as well as they used to, and we have tried all the shops mentioned and more, including M&S. I also wondered if that might be the case. Perhaps the bananas cannot be shipped early in case the virus shows during ripening, so instead of cropping and packing green, they are held back to look for signs of the condition.
