The most common cause (by far) is the 'updater' elements of security programs malfunctioning. (Microsoft's own security software, such as Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender, are the worst offenders but I also gave up on using AVG because it caused similar problems).
So, which security software are you using (and which browser)?

Crossed posts. (Togo's response wasn't there when I started typing). However we've both got our suspicions about AVG. Try uninstalling it and using Avast instead:

I've not actually used Windows Defender myself but every computer I've either had. or needed to help someone with, which used Microsoft Security Essentials had problems with that software's updating element (MsMpEng.exe) hogging all of its resources. As Windows Defender uses exactly the same file, I wouldn't touch it with an infinite number of the proverbial bargepoles!

Nails, honestly Defender is just fine. I have it running alone on a desktop and a laptop. I have not had a problem, as long as you keep off the dodgy sites.....you know what I mean. I had a little though earlier.... what about resetting that new lappie to its original state by using recovery and go back to an earlier build.

(As it's possible that the Base Filtering Engine was disabled by malware, a scan with Malwarebytes might be a good idea too).

Ignore the "couldn't finish installing updates" message for now. Windows will try again and might be successful. If you keep getting the problem though, see here:

//Wi-Fi Sense is a feature in Windows 10 that allows you to connect to your friends shared Wi-Fi connections. That is, you and your friends may opt to share your or their Wi-Fi connections. Friends, according to Microsoft, are people on your Facebook friend list, your Outlook contacts and Skype contacts. By default, all these 3 are pre-checked.//

The thing is Nails you are getting advice to install programmes from people who are not running w10 or defender. I can understand wanting enhanced security with the old w7 or even xp. But if you had just purchased a car with disc brakes and abs would you fit an anchor or parachute "just in case"?
// Is Windows Defender sufficient and good enough?
To be honest, Windows Defender only gives baseline protection, which means, it is only good enough for users for regular day-to-day surfing.
For those who mainly use social networks and may download the occasional file here and there, Windows Defender should be just fine.
If you download a lot of torrent related files from the web, then we doubt Windows Defender would provide enough protection.
Personally, I prefer to use Windows Defender than the other free programs out there, because it doesn’t pop up out of anywhere, and never asks me to spend my money to upgrade to a better service.//

The only other security set up I would considerer is Malwarebytes, and only then if I was intending to use risky sites or link up with risky people on social media.
