If you right click on the icon that appears by the date on the tasbar (it's like a blue star I think) you can chage your notification settings. The new explorer window that opens will probably tell you to buy the new one right now, but if you read on there is a link to click, which opens a new section for you to turn off notifications, after agreeing that this means you're no longer eligible for updates. Turn them off. You should still recieve updates. Sorry if instructions aren't clear enough but I can't remember the scren layouts exactly.
This is quite complicated to remove but you shouldnt have to put up with it.. If your quite clued up with computing follow these instructions, if you dont understand, email me and ill run through how to do it...
1. Lauch Windows Task Manager.
2. End wgatray.exe process in Task Manager.
3. Restart Windows XP in Safe Mode.
4. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32.
5. Delete WgaTray.exe from c:\Windows\System32\dllcache.
6. Restart your computer.
