If you happen to be in Asda within the next couple of hours ('cos I reckon that they'll have sold out by tomorrow) take a look at the prices for their own-label cheddars. (All types, including 'mild', 'mature', 'extra mature', low fat', etc). My guess is that they're clearing existing stocks in readiness for new packaging because the prices are really low. (It's not short-dated stock. The stuff I bought is dated 29th March).

The small packs work out at just £3.00 per kg, with the family-size blocks at £2.40 per kg.

Time to fill the fridge, perhaps?

I only buy Red Leicester. Will never go back to Cheddar.

Red Leicester's nice for cheese on toast but I use a lot of cheese in my cooking (or, say, just to put on top of a chilli-con-carne) and I still find cheddar is the best for that.
Plastic packed supermarket cheese is disgusting.

Cheddar is a particularly bland cheese.

So count me out.
I'm shopping there tomorrow, if they still have the offer on, I'll definitely get some mature cheddar.

Asda's cheddar is one of the better supermarket ones (particularly if you buy the 'extra mature' version). OK, it's not in the same league as Keen's Cheddar (which is made from unpasteurised milk) but it's perfectly acceptable on top of a chilli-con-carne, for cheese on toast or for cooking with.

Like all cheeses though, it need to be left at room temperature (NOT in a fridge!) for at least several days before eating it. (A good Stilton typically needs around a fortnight at room temperature before it's anywhere near ripe. A month can be better).
At that price an extra mature cheddar is a bargain and perfect for families to stock up on a block or two.
Thank you Chris, its fine for cooking with and whilst a little bland if you add mustard to a cheese sauce it helps bring out an enhanced flavour, think I will get some grate it and stick it in the freezer.
Thanks, Chris.......I use lots of Cheddar........I think, though, that a good Stilton's ripe and ready when it walks out of the pantry on its own.....x
You can buy cheddar made with unpasteurised milk? Wish I could buy Camembert made the same way!

If Asda have run out, the cheapest regular priced cheddar I know of (which is surprisingly good) is Lidl's own brand ('Valley Spire'), which is usually around £5 per kg. (The Telegraph ranked it among the 10 best buys in Lidl and it's won several awards).
Do you have an health issue that stops you eating it jackdaw as it is available?

You mean that you can't? That's odd because, since 18 September 2008, all 'AOC' (appellation d'origine controlée) Camembert can ONLY be made with unpasteurised milk!
