Crown Courts only deal with serious cases which have been passed to them by Magistrates' Courts (or appeals against decisions in Magistrates' Courts).
All criminal cases start in Magistrates' Courts and the least serious of them (including drink-driving) remain there.

Chico is right. If it's an 'either way' offence mags are asked to accept jurisdiction, which they usually do unless the circumstances are such that they feel they can't. Although they can still send you to Crown for sentencing, as their powers are limited, normally they don't. If you're up in front of the mags then plead guilty asap. You'd be surprised at how lenient they can be.
