I didn’t intend to watch it and only did so as a result of reading comments on here following the first part. I am not sure that it should have been made and find myself judging those involved based on the portrayals of them in the programme, which could be a far from accurate.
I also think Karen was too naive to have thought things through. She was just after the money to get away from her drab life and courted the publicity. The one thing I noticed was that over and over she was desperate to make sure her friends remained her friends, she hadn't got a clue really. What a sad life they all had.
It made me go cold because I taught a 'Karen' fifteen years ago, she was of low intelligence and despite receiving lots of help she made little progress in the usual school subjects. We felt she was very vulnerable, desperate to make friends, a real target for unscrupulous males. When it was the Prom I asked a couple of nice girls to take her shopping, she tended to buy very unsuitable clothing on her own and on the night she looked lovely and was beside herself, 'I'll remember this all my life'. We all talked to her about the future and found her suitable training place when she left. The most memorable thing she ever said was how much she loved school because everyone cared for her "but then I have to go home and it's all gone". Less than a year after leaving she brought her baby to see us. There are Karens everywhere.
