Business Bank Accounts for the self employed.

Why is it necessary and what are the benefits of opening a business bank account if you are self-employed?

I'm not sure that it IS necessary. A friend of mine has been running his own business for several years now and does not have a business bank account. I expect it would make life simpler though, no chance of getting personal and business money mixed up.
