I posted this here last night and it seems to have disappeared into the ether so here goes again.

I recall a film (or TV series but 99% it's a film). A guy is in hospital (special agent/spy) and he's told that he's been in a coma for several weeks. To prove it the doctor shows him a newspaper that mentions a recent political event ( a summit etc), that he was secretly supposed
to either stop or intervene in. He then notices some small cuts on his hand that should have naturally healed had he been in hospital as long as the doctor told him. From this he surmises that he has been drugged and kidnapped by enemy agents to stop him interevening in this political event.

HELP!!! I'm going nuts.

not sure but it could either be the bourne identity or paycheck
sorry i can't tell you what it is...but it's definitely not The Bourne Identity
it sounds a bit like one of the Harry Palmer films but i cant remember which one (possibly Funeral in Berlin)
Question Author
No, It's considerably older. I saw it at least 20 years ago. Sorry should have mentioned it early.
Funeral in Berlin was made in 1966...40 yrs ago

Did you see the film on its release at the cinema?

If so we are looking at circa 1986?
Question Author
I saw the film on TV, it was broadcast around 20 years ago and I haven't seen it since.
Some of your plot description is familiar. The film I recall is about an American officer who knows the D Day landing details and is caught by the Germans. They make a fake US hospital and tell him the landings were a success and he had been there for weeks. He sees the paper cut on his finger and realises they just want him to reveal the details.
Trouble is, I cannot remember the title!
Playbill,

Is it the film shown every now and again on TCM?

if so, (this is so spooky, cos I thought of that) and I'm sure its something like "36hrs to go" or "48 hrs ..........."

HELP!!
Ignore what I have just said....

does the film star James Garner as the American and Rod Taylor as the German officer?
Question Author
Playbills description sounds very familiar, so if anyone can then come up with the title I will be eternally grateful.
36 Hours (1964)

James Garner, Rod Taylor, Eva Marie Saint.

Army officer is abducted by the Nazis and made to believe the war has ended, so they can pry secrets from him.

WW11 spy thriller
Question Author
Thank you all for your help. It looks very much like 36 Hours. I'll have to look out for it now.
Hi,

As mentioned before, it is one of the films that they show periodically on TCM.....it is where I saw it !
Hi n00dles,

I have seen this film twice on terrestrial TV but do not remember James Garner being in it. However I have just googled it and found a TV version was made and that may be the one I have seen.
Hi PB,

I must admit that I only saw the latter part of the film (confused at what was going on), on TCM, the first half is said to be excellent, then it slips into run of the mill ww11 thriller, according to one of my (many) film books.

Anyhow, we got there in the end...fun fun fun :-D
