Was wondering with all these spin off from films ,toys,clothes from the film .What would have been the first film made that the makers seen the potential for making more money by selling merchandise from the film .Dont think there were Tinman & Lion and Judy Garland look a like dolls .Probabaly Star Wars may be well wrong

Interesting question. According to the BBC Charlie Chaplin led with 'Little Tramp' confectionary, and Walt Disney made a fortune from merchandising Mickey Mouse ears, but it was not until Star Wars that film makers saw the true potential in spin-off products.

Should imagine that the Star Wars franchise were one of the first to mass produce goods based on the films. I distinctly remember having a lunch box and thermos with them on- wish I still had them!
