From a cost point of view, is it really much cheaper is it to have a diesel rather than a petrol car?

As they're more expensive to buy than petrol engines, do they actually save on the running costs to the point of making them more financially viable?

i know that ford was selling the focus diesel for the same price as a 1.6 petrol so in that case yes, plus they are so reliable everything expensive is built stronger, g/boxes engines etc
