It seems that the £200 + 6 points has not deterred people from using their Mobiles whilst driving, should it be £1000 & an instant ban?

It might be best to see how it goes after a period of time.
The penalties only changed on the first of March and it's obvious that those who flout the law aren't the quickest on the uptake.
There's a degree of hysteria around the subject that doesn't help either.

Not gone far enough, I recommend that anyone using a possible lethal weapon of mass destruction ( a mobile phone whilst driving) their vehicle should be impounded & destroyed, after all we have all had enough warnings & it would appear to no avail.

All Traffic Police should immediately be issued with a MOBILE TELEPHONE MILL which would be used to mince offenders phones into 4 millimetre particles. The device would be manually operated via a large cranked handle and be similar to a kitchen mincer, only bigger. To facilitate it's use at the roadside it would need to be firmly clamped to the roof of the offenders car through an open door using a powerful CAM and LEVER, the specially HOBBED FINISH of the HARDEND STEEL GRIP PADS causing considerable damage to the roof lining inside and leaving a dent and damaged paint on the exterior. A DELIVERY CHUTE would direct the telephone remains into the footwell of the car.
These relatively cheap devices would save a fortune in paperwork and the "badge of shame" they inflicted onto the vehicle would in time have more effect than paltry fines...

I know it is against the law to use your phone even when you are stationary in a traffic jam which incidentally is ridiculous. However what if you turned your engine off and put your handbrake on in said traffic jam, could I then use my phone?
