A Rhode Island - or Rhode Island Red, in full - is yet another type of hen.

After the Pilgrim Fathers, many of the earliest British settlers in North America went to Rhode Island. After the battles of King Philip's War, as it was known, the British had completely crushed the native peoples whom they had originally been friendly with. (Typical, really!) Now they'd got the territory, presumably they hoped to keep it.

Well, that's a possibility at least, John.

I would imagine settlers wanted to keep their 'new found land' - a Newfoundland is a breed of dog :o)

That's certainly a better bet than my answer, Dave. I'd definitely go with 'Newfoundland', John, as it refers to settlers anywhere, whereas my suggestion is probably much too specific.
