emmie - //so some think it a good idea, whilst others think that they should string them up by their proverbial's, not one i advocate by the way. // As always, these are the two schools of thought that emerge when this subject is debated. Personally, even when taking in the severity of the crimes that can result from mental illness - and this is just one of them - I am...

Andy there are places for the criminally insane to go to.
When did paedophillia become an illness?

Aren't sexual urges either inherent within the makeup of the person (gay, straight,by all that sort of thing) but the finer details, such as fetishes and urges (wether uncontrollable or otherwise) a learned response? How else do you say sexual urges are cemented within the personality?
In some (please note I said some) cases, the person will have been abused themselves from a very young age, they then grow up believing that it is normal way to behave after all its been happening to them for so many years, then you get the paedophiles who abuse because they get kicks out of it. Neither of these groups would I treat with chemical castrations.

I think the majority of people - and I am certainly among them - don't know anything like enough about this complex subject to definitively offer concrete opinions.

I would offer that - as I have said - cases are individual, and there is no 'one sixe fits all' - either for punishment, or for treatment.

Each case requires appropriate assessment and decision making by people who have most of the alphabet after their name, and they tend not to favour the 'cheese wire' option, so I am more inclined to leave it to them.
Emmie I have already stated that they should go to prison
Question Author
and once they are released, what then, leave them to their own devices to commit a crime again?
No you put a program in place.
Emmie do you have any experience of paedophiles or is your knowledge from newspapers and the pub?
Question Author
Islay neither.
Right then!
Not all paedophiles have committed a crime.

It's not illegal to be a paedophile, it's illegal to act on it!!

Some seek help before a crime is committed..
Question Author
Islay, are you an expert?
i posted about this because it is a subject that came up earlier today.

if they go to prison, there must be something put into place for them, so as not to commit a further crime, however many seem to be recidivists, so they end up back in jail.
I have spent several years working in the area and I grew up living with the fallout.
Emmie - my point is that not all of them commit a crime and seek help before they do. Maybe medical castration would be suitable for them.
