Altho early days I am having a lot of pain in my left arm as this would be the 3rd break and so would like to think of a small automatic car.

my own is a hyundai 110 (Dec 2011) but only 13,000 miles. I don't want to be out of pocket a lot if I was to change. Thanks for any advice re automatics.

I bought a hyundai i10 automatic about 10 months ago and love it. It was recommended via online search as the best small automatic.

Auto is a good choice, if a 2nd hand purchase, get Mechanic to check it out throughout, the Auto box is an expensive unit to repair, so the gear including reverse need trying in motion.

Yes mine was new but I am sure you could pick up a decent second hand one. My only slight criticism would be that the boot is fairly small but for such a small car it feels very roomy inside.

My arthritic left knee forced a change to an automatic last year. Mr J2 (car freak) ferreted for weeks and I ended up with an Automatic Nissan Note (2nd hand, 4 yrs. old). It's perfect, if a little heavy on petrol. Have had problems with arthritic left wrist recently, but could manage OK. Hyundi make small automatics, but I know nothing about them.

5 year warranty with an Hyundai, pretty reliable little cars to.

7 year warranty with A kia, they make small automatic cars as well.

'Small' automatics can be a bit fussy - (constantly changing gear). The bigger the better.

I've got a little Jazz. It's a hybrid so it can be jerky, but it drives fine once you're under way, and road tax is only £10. You can get all-petrol ones.

The i10 is a good automatic because it's one of the very few autos still equipped with a torque convertor and so is not subject to the low speed jerkiness which seems to affect a lot of the newer trick systems....
As for acquiring one, it should not be too expensive to swap for an auto of the same age, even at the dealers, because they would much rather have a used manual in stock than an auto.
