New Vehicle Registration Fee £55

I paid this when buying a new car recently. Is it a government tax or is it a fee charged by the car sales outlet?

It has to be charged and passed on to the DVLA

If not then it looks like an admin charge by the sales outlet to me

It's not the road fund licence nor is it a snide charge slipped in by the sales outlet, FF

Many thanks to all who replied. I thought it was probably another dirty little trick devised by pencil pushers in the treasury and elsewhere to gouge members of the public yet again.

I am taking delivery of a new car on 31-03-2017 and this charge is new to me....yet another stealth tax if you ask me !

We've had to pay it for years, at least since 2004 - it was certainly £55 in 2011, in 2006 it was £38

Just to point out that the 'pen pushers' in the treasury are just doing as they are told - they don't make up these charges they just bring them in. I'm sure they don't like paying it anymore than you do!!

Thanks hc. I had a company car for half of that time and since then might have avoided it by buying pre registered demo cars with less than 500 miles on the clock. I do remember the old car tax days when on my first car (around £4000) I had to pay a few hundred pounds in Car Tax, so I suppose this isn't too bad

Yes, been going years...I've paid it at least three times on new cars...the amount keeps creeping up.
