I think this problem has arisen not least because of the modern insular a broken family unit.

In years gone by families worked together more to keep family together. They looked after the young and the young looked after the old for much longer. It wasn't perfect and probably needed a bit,of help and tweaking but for the most part we all took responsibility for our youngers and elders.

Now we live such insular lives that we palm off our children and old people at the soonest opportunity. Along with the welfare state we expect others to do the job we once did.

Suddenly, with an aging population we find there isn't enough money to pay for everything. Who'd of thought it?

Surely the answer is that if the private sector can not provide the service at the budget the government has deemed sufficient, all the government needs to do is form a 'department of care' and provide excellent service for the budget it knows is sufficient, itself.

It is population size, not how many are pensioners, that cause welfare costs. Until the government has achieved 100% employment then those fortunate enough to find employment has to cover the country's costs regardless as to whether those in need or welfare are young or old.

Not overnight Mikey. Like any change it is less awkward taking it steady.

This does rather remind me of the days I worked in H&C and they did time and motion studies on how long everything should take.

They kept shaving 3 minutes here and 2 minutes there and another minute for something else so when I left the room cleaners were allocated just 17 minutes to fully clean a guest bedroom and bathroom. Even a relatively clean one took nearly 20 minutes.

It is the same with care. Everything is allocated in 15 minute slots regardless of the care needed. You can't even make a cup of tea and chat In that time let alone make a real difference to someone's life.

If it were that easy and cost effective the councils would be providing the care homes and not outsource to private sectors.

I also send my sincerest sympathies, linda. Mum died in 1990 and I still miss her such a lot. Be aware that the loss can crash in some months later. x
