When trying to optimize (defrag.) my drives on W10 Windows Administrative Tools, I noted that my System Drive is indicated that it requires optimization (49% fragmented). However on clicking the 'Optimize' button, it seems to make a very short attempt at optimization, but then reverts to the 'Needs optimization (49% fragmented) and takes no further action. All other drives are OK.
Can anyone help in advising how I can defrag my System drive. Many thanks.

Defragging hard drives is meant to be a thing of the past, as the recent versions of Windows are meant to do it 'on the fly'. So I'm surprised that Windows is reporting your drive as so badly fragmented.

However the most frequent problems with defragging have always been associated with other software running and trying to write to the drive at the same time as the user is trying to defrag it. Try booting into Safe Mode, then using Task Manager to close all unnecessary programs (especially your antivirus software) before making another attempt at defragging.
Is it a Solid State Drive (SSD)?

Sorry hc4361
or down load and use this..., https://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/
it will auto disengage the windows deffragger
^^^ I hope not! While there's plenty of discussion in various forums about the wisdom, or otherwise, of trying to defrag an SSD, the most commonly held view is that you should never do so.
That's weird!

When I looked at this thread just now the last answer was Hc4361's, posted at 1710. The other posts didn't show, so it was that post which I was responding to above.

Sorry for any confusion!!!!
