Battle Of Vimy Ridge

I have a great uncle who died on 14th April 1917. He died in a hospital in Arras after being injured on 10th April in France. Would this have been at the battle of Vimy ridge? He was a stretcher bearer with the 27th Field Ambulance and suffered a gunshot wound to the head. So sad!

It is on the news because so many Canadians died
and we are being sort of global this year

My fathers senior partner ( vet) painted in oils
mounted troops ( cavalry ) going to the front at Arras
Some of his piccies are in store at the Imperial war museum

as a vet his gee-gees are much better than the men

so horrific for him, he never painted in oils again apparently

( on antiques detectives a year or so ago - fronted up by Lake's daughter whom I remember as a 12 y old)

Was he Canadian? As the battle for Vimy ridge was conducted by the Canadian Army but would have had British troups in support and started on 9th of April and was part of a larger offensive in the Arras sector 12th April for Battle of Vimy Ridge, but the Battle of Arras lasted until 16th May.

A lot of the Canadians who were at Vimy volunteered because they had only recently move to Canada from the UK. They felt a very strong sense of duty to Britain because many of them had close family here. The bravest of them all was Lieutenant John Llewellyn Evans.

He is buried in Etaples Cemetery. He was not Canadian.

Thank you OldBather2. I got the date slightly wrong, he was injured on the 13th and died on the 17th. I bought a poppy for him and had his name read out at The Tower of London. I suppose that the stretcher bearers were easy targets as they had to stand up to carry the dead and injured.
