Damage To Turf By Lawnmower
3 Answers
I had some turf laid last September and when it's been cut this year there are a number of holes/bald patches in the lawn.
This is the first time i've had turf is this normal for the first cut of the year or has the lawn mower or way it's been cut damaged the lawn mower?
How can i now repair this?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.no its not normal for turf....maybe you have set the mower blades to low? but you usually notice if you are “scalping a lawn” The other possibility which has happened to me is that the turf has cranefly larvae in it which kill the roots of patches of grass and leave brown spots. If this is the case, get in touch with the supplier and get a refund
I saw a lorry load of turf the other day. I said to Mrs NJ "That's what I'm going to do when we win the lottery - send our lawn away to have it cut!". :-)
As mentioned, you may be "scalping" your new turf. Is your mower a rotary model or a cylinder type? Cylinder mowers are notorious for scalping a lawn where there are irregularities. Whatever type you're using, you should set the blades high for a few cuts (you should do this anyway early in the season). There are plenty of patching kits available but normal grass seed should do the job. Be sure to rake the bare patch to loosen the soil, spread the seed, sprinkle a very fine layer of soil on top, cover with netting to stop the birds eating the seed and water in well.
