They have added a word that wasn't in the letter and have run with it.

The letter said over weight not obese. Even I could read that!

Where I do think these tests are too generic and does at times give results that on the surface look a bit daft they do have to start somewhere.

I work in a school where we have had some very fat kids. Five year olds not even able to bend over and do up their shoes!! luckily not prevalent but we do get at least one a year. Some parents just don't see it or don't know how to make changes but those are the ones that should maybe be targeted rather than the 'just outside the norm'.

Some parents (me) would have laughed it off - others go to the media (them).


The tests are largely rubbish, a smart pair of eyes suffices then a quiet word with the parents if needed.

I got the same letter when my son was in primary. He wasn't overweight at all.

Most of these sort of tests are mostly rubbish out to tick boxes to show the authorities are helping fight obesity. But common sense is not allowed and a letter goes out for even a small difference.

I'd have just binned it.

Storm in a teacup. That said, I object to authorities judging and criticising me, and think they should keep their nose out; so I understand​ the anger. Letters should go out only in clear cases of real problems.

I suspect that the issue is more that the parents DID read the letter properly and didn't just dismiss it as a standard 'waste of public money, straight into recycling without reacting naturally', letter.

if he really is one point over the healthy limit then - just going by the photo - there's something wrong with the limits, not with the school.

Agreed jno - I give tests such as BMI little credence. Using your eyes is enough.
