Traditional Liberals will have no problem with the questions of Gay marriage/sex but this is turning into a major problem for Farron. Now every interviewer will start asking these questions meaning that he'll get bogged down in something he doesn't want to talk about at the expense of propounding Lib Dem policies.

The definition of the word 'gay' has changed a number of times.

It used to mean, 'carefree', then it meant, 'immoral'.

Then in the 19th century the word 'gay' changed meaning again, and referred to a woman who was a prostitute.

In this period, a gay man was someone who slept with a lot of women (ironically enough), often prostitutes.

Also at this time, the phrase “gay it” meant to have sex.

So, let's not get too caught up in the entomology of the word. It's not been hijacked by anyone - it's been changing for centuries.
