But they can ripen without being actually exposed to full sunlight . We have a couple of thornless blackberries growing up a north facing fence, and another on a south facing fence. Strangely enough, the first ones all seem to ripen around the same time so I suspect temperature also has something tle to do with it.
They should be ripe for picking around September but can be influenced a lot by the weather while they develope.
The ones around my neck of the woods at the mo are still in their flowering stage and I'm praying for some rain right now, otherwise they will be small and shrivled and not worth picking.
Keep a close watch on them. Good Luck T bird+

The berries I'm talking about are at the edge of the woods and into the woods as well and already have berries that are beginning to turn....I haven't seen them, but I will this week. We're mid-Atlantic Virginia and we've finally had rain and lots of warm weather........this property was just purchased on closed on the end of last July so this is a whole new experience for us.........
