What was the context?

If you saw it on this site, it might have been a disparaging (and irresponsible) remark made against someone with a green name.

it was in a forum where this really obnoxious person is mean to new people. Now they keep saying that they've pwned someone.

I tried to find a definition and found part of a blurb that had "pwning noobs" in it....

I also found this site and decided to ask here.

sunnyside, The noobs part is an alternative spelling of newbies. Newbie is a contraction of 'new member'

I could only guess at the first part, but it doesn't sound like anything nice. It might be an 'in' word on that forum, or it might be part of modern youth speak.

It doesn't sound like a very nice forum. Does it allow members to report posts? If too many members have the same attitude, the best bet might be to find somewhere else to hang out - like here for example.

For general talk, the ChatterBank section is the place to go but it is temporarily out of use while it is reburbished. It should be open again sometime in the new year.

A noob (or n00b) is different to a newb (or newbie).

A n00b is an idiot. Specifically, one who is woefully naive and lacking in knowledge of a specific area of expertise (in a fandom, game, or online), but is so convinced that he/she knows far more about said area than most other people, that they blatantly disregard, and often fight against, helpful suggestions and opinions from other, more knowledgeable people. This is different from a newbie in that, while both are inexperienced and unknowledgeable, a newbie can learn as he/she gets more aquainted with the fandom/game/internet forum/group, whereas the n00b is so delusioned by their non-existent knowledge, that no ammount of convincing will deter him. The n00b refuses to admit he/she's naive in the area that they claim to have knowledge in and, instead, flames other people and generally act like a complete and total idiot trying to convince others of their imagined intellectual superiority. Generally the cause of flame wars.

Thank you, you have all been very helpful. A few young people on this forum are really bullying the newer and some of the more naive members. They don't fit in with what the forum is for,"young pop singer", they actually say they hate this person so they "flame" ( I learned what that meant fast) most anyone who isn't in their inner meanie circle. I stay there to get their focus on "flaming" me and leaving the others alone, and I am sort of a self appointed Hall monitor. I know it is probably pointless but so far, I haven't just given up yet. The admin seems to be just as young and "on their side" so to speak. I just may be "IP" banned soon anyway and won't be needing to put them in their place anymore. Sometimes they come up with these terms that I can't find too easily. Pwn was one of them.

There's some random launguage in Internet Chatrooms calle l33t.

Pwn = Own

N00b = Newbie.

Pwning a n00b basicly means stumping a blithering idiot who hasn't got a clue what he/she is doing. It's quite fun to do actually. :)

Its not some super extensive bullying lingo.. pwning noobs simply means "Power Owning a new member or beginner" , its usaully used in online gaming and people say it when their in the lead.. it started with saying "owning noobs" but we just put a p on the front to mean power owning.

I asked the question in december of 05. In the forum that it was used in, it was used as bullying lingo.

These answers were helpful to me in understanding that.
