What A Carry On I've Had Today...
...thinking of changing my name to Gness as I must be the unluckiest bloke in cyberspace. Switched on my laptop just before midday only to be told that I'd run out of data (I use an O2 mobile dongle). I thought, "That can't be right, I only topped up a fortnight ago with 8 gb". Then I sort of twigged, when I was asleep Windows 10 had installed the new version. Does it really consume that much data? It must have been at least 4 gb. Anyway, nil desperandum, I'll just buy some more.
Not so simple. It asked me to input my number, which had hitherto automatically appeared in the box. I hadn't a clue, so spent 1/2 hour ferreting around in drawers to see if I could find it. No, I couldn't. Still, one last avenue, I'll ring O2. Guy asked me for my number. I replied that if I knew that I wouldn't be ringing the first place. It transpired that because I was PAYG and not on a contract they had no record of my number. He told me that if I opened the dongle and removed the SIM card I would see the number. I replied that I did not possess the dexterity for such a task, I have enough trouble opening a bottle of gin. I thanked him for his time and resigned myself to doing without for two days.
Having made a little lunch my eyes lit upon a drawer that I had not explored. I wonder? Sure enough, there was the little plastic sod.
Happy ending? Not really. As soon as I entered the first digit the whole number came up in the autofill box. Even I could have worked out that the first digit must be 0. Two hours of my life gone which I can never recover.

I chose Sunday morning, but thinking back there was no message to say that the update had been installed, which there usually is. It was the loss of my saved info, plus the disappearance of 4 gb of data which made me think something had happened.
