I need some help to understand storage heater

My son has a new flat with storage heaters. I do know how they work....well the basics...but there's one little thing I want to know.

When turning the input knob up or down, I hear a click at various points and need to know what exactly this is telling me.

For example.....if I turned the input knob down and it clicked at 2, then turned it back up and it click at 4.....what does this mean? is one click saying this is the temperature of the room, and the other one saying where it needs to be to get a boost the next night? If someone could explain this please? Thank you

That click is the built-in thermostat operating.
The difference is just the 'lag' of the bi-metallic strip in the switch.
In heaters with the thermostat reading room temp .. as the temp falls, the swich will make, and apply power to heater elements.
Are you sure they are actually Storage heaters .. and not just Wall heaters?
If the room is a bit cool and power available .. try turning up above the click (clockwise a bit) to test.

Yes, they are definitely storage heaters. The make is Alto....which I had never heard of before, and they are manual not automatic. Obviously we can only adjust them for the next days input as they only power up during the economy 7 hours, and I understand about turning the input up for more heat the next day. The letting agent of the flat had told us about turning the knob and hearing it click but when I just turned it up, there was no click, so I turned it down, then up again, and that was when I heard the click in the 2 different places so was confused what one I should take note of for the setting the next day. Suppose it's just the case of trial and error till we get used to them. Thank you for your reply

Basicly you turn them on overnight while you get the cheaper electricity rate,They charge up heat inside them,Then in the morning when you get up you flick a switch and they stop charging and give off the heat in the daytime not using the higher electricity rate. Thats how they worked in a house I once lived in.

just put input to max and leave output on its lowest setting so they hold enough heat for the evening...then . you can increase the output if you need to.. simples

have both the dials turned down low!!
they kick out so much heat, we used to have ours on high and it was boiling!
also, turn them off for a day or two every 3 days. they cost an absolute fortune to run and we learnt the hard way after revieving a £650 bill after our 1st 3 months in the appartment!

that sounds crazy I had them in a three bed flat and it was about 60 pounds a month in the coldest quarter and switching them off every few days just means they use loads more power reheating I have them in my new flat and the estimate from the power company is around the same... would suggest they were not on an economy overnight tariff or were not timer controlled. (or the timer was broken)

really?! i think we must have got ourselves well and truely stung then because we are actually moving over the road to a gas heated place because no matter how much we fiddle with them it costs so much! thanks

Amy, it sounds like you might not be on the economy 7 tariff even though you have storage heaters.

How well they work depends on how old they are... I had a brand new flat where they were so good we kept them on low, whereas our current flat is 20 years old and even on full power we need extra heaters plugged in to keep us warm!
