You need to weigh the items you sell accurately and remember to include the cost of packaging to get a realistic cost for postage and packing. I sell a lot of stuff on ebay mainly vintage photographic items , you really need to know about what you are selling to avoid buying unsaleable items , to know what will get a good price and be able to give a good description . A really good photo is VITAL it is by far the most important thing in the listing, poor photo = no sale as simple as that .
Lastly sell worldwide, never just UK only, 80 % of my items go overseas mainly USA Australia and the Far East ( just sold a clock I got for nothing to Korea for £26 ) .

I think you have the wrong end of the stick about eBay - you don't pay the postage, the buyer does. As Eddie says, you work out the postage and show it on your listing, the buyer pays for that on top of your sale price. Selling lots of things at a small price can sometimes bring in more money that just selling one or two high value things.
