It would be ironic if the move to increase safety resulted in planes actually becoming more dangerous.

European regulators have warned placing what could be potentially hundreds of devices in the hold on long-haul flights could compromise safety by increasing the risk of fire from poorly deactivated lithium-ion batteries.

Well it certainly worries me. Lithium batteries don't explode but they do overheat if they are damaged in any way. When they are damaged they suffer from thermal runaway which means that they catch fire and BCF or other conventional means do not work. The only way to contain a lithion ion battery is to cool it which is not going to be possible in an aircraft hold. That is something to look forward to (not)
