birthday gift ideas for 1 year old girl
6 Answers
anybody got any bright ideas for a 1st birthday gift for a 1yo girl (my niece). Her parents are not short of cash nor friends and family showering her with gifts so things like clothes and toys I'd like to avoid if possible as she'll have loads. I was thinking of premium bonds but minimum purchase is 100 and i don't want to spend that much - 30-50 is my budget. don't mind if it's something for short term, medium term or long term. c'mon folks help me out here.

An alternative would be a nice collection of hardback books with a personal inscription (Aesops Fables, CS Lewis, Winnie the Pooh, Hans Christian Anderson etc.) The parents can read them as bedtime stories until they are old enough to read for themselves
My ideology is that such gifts will last for many years to come and will remain constantly popular in a world where childrens toys come and go with the seasons.

For my niece and nephew's first birthdays I bought them each a unit trust portfolio (boring I know but stick with it) via the Rupert Children's Fund. (Invesco operate it I think.) From memory, each unit cost 25. The good bit was that each birthday they'd get a fun card from "Rupert" and there was also the opportunity to buy extra units (so more affluent relatives can contribute too!) and various soft toys etc. Needless to say, in the current economic climate, the value has suffered a bit but my niece is still looking forward to getting her hands on the money when she reaches 18 next year.
