These statistics are usually nonsense. Five days is far too short a period but it's not really surprising as tensions are high and some exploit these situations to push their own agenda. . . Data needs to be viewed with a large pinch of salt. Pressure groups can encourage people to report, exaggerate/make up claims of hate crime; and thee isn't always a link between the numbers of reports and the number of claims

Comparing two days' data when the numbers are so small (28 claims out of maybe 2 million citizens) seems meaningless, especially for something that is hard to identify .
But is is clear these atrocities do lead to a hardening of views, often illogical views, as we see so much on here as people want something to be done and think there are simplistic solutions that the police/authorities/ politicians cannot see (or these latter groups realise knee jerk reactions may make things worse)

The report quotes figures from the police, not people who want something done.

The reports come from the public. The police have to investigate them. It doesn't necessarily mean there have been more attacks or actual crimes. I hope there hasn't been more hate crimes (maybe some hope there are more) but I can see that emotions are high and some will lash out. But i still think it seems odd to try to draw conclusions into two days' figures.

The notion of a 'hate' crime is the most absurd concept ever. An extreme example of the hyperbolic use of language. Any crimes perpetrated against special interest groups are automatically placed in that category. A crime is a crime, irrespective of motive and the idea of 'hate' should have no part to play, nor should it result in harsher penalties.

The biggest hate crime was killing 22 innocent young people and they are worried about someones hurt feelings.

Here's a typical example from one of our biggest mischief-making pressure groups:
