Make sure you only have one phone connected. If you use broadband are the filters on all sockets ?
Remove the front of the main box and plug the phone directly in. Is it still unusable ?
Do a visual check of the cables both in and out of the house. Any obvious problems ?
All else fails, contact BT (or whoever your supplier is) and try to ignore threats of large bills if it proves to be your equipment.

To check the instrument itself take it to a friend, neighbour or anyone who will allow you to plug it into their line so you can find out if you get a dialling tone. If you do then the problem lies somewhere else than with the phone. If you don't then your phone is either not compatible with the standard socket or else faulty.
You can report faults to TalkTalk via the internet Henry. If you do that they'll divert all your incoming calls to your mobile and it won't cost you anything.
If you've checked the line with a different phone you have nothing to worry about. They'll warn you it may cost you if the problem is in your house but don't let it put you off. So long as you have done the checks OG suggested the problem will be outside your house and is THEIR responsibility.

You say you have 3 phones.
Is that 3 phones plugged into 3 different sockets? Or 1 cordless phone with base unit and 2 additional handsets?
If its 3 sockets are they individual sockets or are 2 of them wired to 1 socket?
What you need to do is test everything, piece by piece.
Unplug everything everywhere.
Plug a filter into the main socket. Plug a phone into the filter. Try the phone.
Try the other 2 phones in turn (assuming they are not cordless phones)
If that doesn't work, repeat but using a different filter.
If that works, take note of which bits work, then unplug everything again and repeat with the next socket, then again with the third socket.
Then reconnect socket 1 and then add in socket 2, then socket 3.
