She said there is "far too much tolerance" of Islamist extremism in Britain today, that rooting out terror would require "some difficult and often embarrassing conversations", and that while the three recent terror attacks in the UK were not linked by "common networks", they were "bound together by the single evil ideology of Islamic extremism".

She added that things could not "continue as they are" and suggested that "pluralistic British values" should be established as superior and that "safe spaces" for terror planning on the internet should be stamped out through new "international agreements that regulate cyberspace".

Listening to BBC news just now, she is reported to have said that enough is enough and that suspects should receive longer custodial sentences.

At last someone in authority is telling it like it is. I'm with her all the way.

For once, ymb speaks sense; there are enough potentials in major Scottish establishments.....NI or Wales, I have no idea - no mention yet of Portrushistan, Caerphillydad, or Swanseabad, I have not seen, though mikey can probably comment on how close he is to the local mosque.
Well they do. Doesnt mean they are the terrorist sort, but how can you tell the good from the bad?
ask them....

precisely what the French and Belgians find difficult.....believe it or not, our services are much better connected to the Muslim populations with the contacts that go on between the moderates and the services, despite what has happened in this so-called holy month. 500 active groups are being followed - so it's no wonder such attacks get through - Manchester perhaps some learning lessons but, honestly, hiring a white van and three Islamic nutters with knives? This sort of attack is always going to be harder to track and stop.
I agree with Mrs May and hope she is given the majority she needs to get on with it.

VE, my apologies if you have explained elsewhere, but what would you do in addition, or differently, to what Mrs May is suggesting that you feel would make us safer?

/// We cannot and must not pretend things can continue as they are. Things need to change and they need to change in four important ways.' ///

Mrs May outlined her four point plan:

1: Defeating the extreme Islamist ideology to make them understand 'pluralistic British values' are superior
2: Ending the 'safe space' online for the plotting of terror attacks
3: Continuing military action against ISIS terrorists in Iraq and Syria
4: Tougher prison sentences at home for terrorist offences

They don't fill me with much enthusiasm.

/// The PM added: 'Our country has made significant progress in disrupting plots and protecting the public. ///

What three attacks in as many months, I wouldn't call that significant progress.

'far too much tolerance' - especially by the government and MP's !!! Finally saw the light eh Mrs May ?? The average man and woman in the street lost our tolerance a long time ago ...
Yes, HerIam. The UK is at war with Islamic 'Losers' and we must defeat them.

Now, it may seem absurd, but as an ex military, and quite old 'winner' I would willingly take on one, or even more, Islamic fecking losers to help protect my beloved UK from those who hate us and our way of life - which they continue to enjoy.

May says enough is enough. So do something for God's sake. Troops back on the streets, internment now, State of Emergency. These evil *** are killing us.

Give her a chance. She only said it a few hours ago. ;o)
may's hands are tied legally and politically, she cannot do anything
of any substance.
We know that we are being attacked by followers of the Muslim faith, we know that not all Muslims are terrorists but the time has come to say enough is enough. Islam should be declared unsafe & banned in the UK, all Mosques should be closed so that they can no longer be used to carry their deadly messages to the young & vunerable & appearing in public in disguises which hide ones identity should bring all heavy fines or even imprisonment. All foreign UK citizens should swear allegiance to the Crown before claiming any public financial support. It is high time we got TOUGH
I don't see that we are in the slightest tolerant of extremism. I wish her good luck with the international agreements. Being robust in identifying it and stamping it out across the public sector and across society requires good Intelligence, and I'm surprised to hear the Intelligence service is not presently doing all they can. These sound like 'feel good' sound bites for the public to me.

OG, //I don't see that we are in the slightest tolerant of extremism.//

You don't? How long were Anjem Choudhury and Abu Hamza left free to spout their bile?
As I understand it the authorities did what they legally could. Tolerance wasn't the issue.
I’ve listened to Teresa May’s speech regarding the London terrorism and that we must do more , but we have left it too late. Many years too late. Attitudes are initially formed during our childhood years and we separate our children from infancy onwards by religion. We have had faith based and funded , state schooling for many decades. Initially it was mainly C of E and Roman Catholicism that was separated. but now we have :

One third of the 20,000 state funded schools in England are faith schools, approximately 7,000 in total, of which 68% are Church of England and 30% are Roman Catholic. There are 42 Jewish, 12 Muslim, 3 Sikh and 1 Hindu faith schools.
It was in 1997 under Labour that we had the expansion in faith schooling .

I worked in different schools in different capacities and I found that the RC schools were the most biased towards their version of religion , they tried to introduce religion into every subject
e,g .Even in a game of soccer it was started with “ Let’s use the muscles given to us by the Lord God “ and when they scored it was always “Thanks to God “.

I'm not ignoring your question, Garaman. No I haven't attempted a comprehensive answer on AB (or anywhere else for that matter). I have railed often enough about the inadequacy and often irrelevance of the West's response.

Will give you my thoughts in full tomorrow.
It is amazing how many times folk say 'how do you spot a good Muslim from a bad one'?

If this is the case, how can Mrs May, despite her speech today, make the public feel safer?

ag, //how can Mrs May, despite her speech today, make the public feel safer?//

She can do what she’s doing, but ultimately everyone must be aware that nothing can stop a vehicle ploughing into a crowd if that’s what the driver intends to do.
Wonder how Mrs May was unaware of this 'tolerance' during those years of her tenure as Home Sec?
