I really need to purchase a new PC. My old one is ready for the museum. An upgrade would probably be just as expensive etc. as a new or second hand purchase. New PC must be able to download and burn music, vid. and DVD. Descent screen also. Am running on ntl. broadband at present. Anyone got recommendations where to buy one relativly cheaply as funds quite low at present. No jargon please!

It had a good processor, lots of memory, decent size hard disk, DVD writer, 17inch flat panel monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, Windows XP Home.
Total cost including delivery was shade under �450 pounds.
If that sounds about right I will give you the details for the Dell site and the codes to enter.

How about this from Dabs. An Acer E500 at 450 pounds. Delivery may be extra.
Fast CPU, reasonable amount of memory, large hard disk, TV tuner card built in, flat panel monitor, DVD re-writer, Windows Media Center Edition.

I know you said no jargon, but this PC has 512Mb of memory which is reasonable, To allow for future growth I would try to get double that at 1Gb.
Not the end of the world if you dont, but worth thinking about.
Apart from that, the machine above looks a good deal.
Note there are probably loads of other deals between 400 and 500 pounds so dont leap in with the first one you see.
See if you can get a 19" monitor if you can, rather than a 17" as you can see movies and things better.

Overall good spec, but has a 19" monitor. No TV tuner card though (you win some you lose some).
