Hi,
Inherited a rotary drier at my new place but it only turns slightly, about an inch. I've never used one before, is there something I need to do to "unlock" it, or is it just seized up ?
Thanks

The pole doesn't turn in the ground. They are usually designed with a bearing/joint in the pole - either just below the rigging, or just above the ground - which allows the bottom part to be strong and stable (ahem) whilst the top part can rotate. This bearing/joint is probably seized.

Eth, turning is essential so as to avoid being slapped in the face by a wet sheet when mowing the grass.
You deserve being slapped in the face by a wet sheet if you mow the grass beneath a newly hung out load of washing..all those grass cuttings getting stuck on clean wet washing, tut! You'd get slapped by more than a wet sheet if you did that in this establishment ;)
The 'spin' is so that you can turn the dryer round to peg washing without needing to walk around it. It has nothing to do with getting the washing dry.
It is not a sort of outdoor spin dryer as some seem to think!
In some situations the wind may catch the washing cause the dryer to turn but that is not the intention. The washing will dry just as fast if the drier is stationary or spinning.
CW1 a 'stuck' rotary dryer will dry the washing just as well but you will have to put up with walking round it as you peg the washing out
All a bit pointless anyway. Its summer , soon as you walk into the garden with some washing a house a few doors away will light up a barbeque and choke you to death with smoke and the stink of paraffin from the 'fire lighters '.

EDDIE51, I'm not /that/ bothered about it spinning while the washing's on it but is annoying having to walk round it. Since oiling it, tis a little better tho'. As for the bar-bees, if it wasn't raining my ex neighbour had his on next to our fence, but I've moved to "the sticks" now & they're not allowed, whoop whoop :D
