Hi there,

I posted this in P&P today, but no response, I thought it might do better in B&S so sorry for the rep.

My husband has been given the possibility of being transferred to Tokyo with his work. We have five children and I did live in the orient as a child.

Has anyone any experience of living in Tokyo with a young family. I am aware of the extionate costs of living in TOkyo, but are there any other practical issues that anyone would like to warn me about.

Also, what things should I take with me, and what things should I leave behind?

What would be a good ward to look at for renting in? My husband would be working in Chiyoda-ku? We would like to be within a relatively quick commute on the excellent MTR.

After praying for a drastic change and hoping it would be for a more simple rural life, we have been faced with this instead. I'll say one thing, God has a keen sense of humour!!!!

love to y'all
mimi.

I'm not sure of the details Mimi, but you might want to check the requirements around naturalisation of your children and National Service. I have a feeling that if you chose to raise the children as Japanese, with Japanese schooling etc., then they are eligible for two years National Service as adults.

Congrats on the move though - lucky lady!

Hi Dizzieblonde
Thanks for taking time out to reply to me.

I had no idea about that, so I'll definately check that out. Nothing's final yet, you know what investment banks are like, can't make up their minds sometimes, so it may never happen. I just like to be prepared.

I love the far East, so I hope it does though.

Thanks again.

Can't help with your dilemma, but waht a great opportunity.
If your children are happy, then go for it,you may never forgive yourself if you turn down the chance.Prey on your mind for ever

Hi Rocknroll. I agree totally. I travelled alot as a child and lived for a while in Hong Kong. I would always embrace an opportunity to travel and have the kids travel. Two things I want to give to them; one is roots and the other is wings, or so the old phrase says.

One thing I learned from travelling is that the world is not that big and certainly nothing to be scared of. Therefore, I hope we do get to go. I love the far east!

However, jolly scary for me now as a responsible grown up. paperwork, and the house to pack up etc.....nightmare. Still, an adventure nonetheless and I love adventure!

thanks again for replying:
