My in laws will celebrate 40 years anniversary. They are comfortably off. My sister is giving them red tulip bulbs and bottle of Port. I would like to give them a gift via Oxfam, a goat or similar. Would that be OK or can anyone suggest a nice gift, up to £40?

I would not like to receive a goat!
What kind of people are they?
If they are having a celebration how about some red sparkling wine?

Not a lasting gift bu certainly in keeping with the occasion.
If they are supporters of donkey sanctuaries and such, then sponsor a donkey for them?

You know them, we don't :-)

What are their likes and dislikes?
Goat curry might be more appropriate (if you're stuck on the goat idea) - because of the cockney rhyming slang.

The port is a nice idea because it's ruby red - whereas the goat might not be.

Maybe we need to find you a charitable donation related to the colour red?

For example, something from Bono's charity might be a winner? That's referred to as (RED): https://red.org/

There's a nice Vespa!

Or some other designer items which might suit them?

How about a lovely ruby glass bowl from an antique shop and then put their favourite sweeties in it?
What about a red glass paperweight or a vase.
We received a voucher for afternoon tea at Woburn Abbey, perhaps there is a venue near them that do the same thing. We also got a lovely red acer tree and a Ruby Wedding rose tree, all very much appreciated.

Thank you for so many good ideas. Obviously the goat would go to Africa!
The goats a bit of a non gift though!
We had a boss once that bought the team a goat - we got a crappy bit of paper saying 'I bought you a goat its on its way to Africa', so we gave a piece of paper in a card saying 'we bought you a case of wine its now on the way down the toilet'!!
Don't get vases or bowls or any type of ornament. After forty years they will have all the stuff they need. Theatre tickets, vouchers for afternoon tea, a selection of six bottles of red/rose wine, Fortnum and Mason's hamper...something like that...a treat.
I bought my parents a really lovely painting of robins - they loved it.
If you really want to stick with a charity donation you could always give a gift to British Heart foundation?
If they like red wine give them a nice bottle, otherwise champagne or something they'd enjoy. It doesn't have to be ruby-themed.

Not a goat, please.
