I thought the phrase originated with The Golden Shot (Bob Monhouse, et al), so echoing mrsdanvers's feeling that it might have had something to do with an ITV show. I seem to recall some fluffy puppet saying 'gravy booby' in a spoonerised version of the then popular saying 'groovy, baby'. Up a bit, down a bit... Do I get a prize?
