I think I have put this before but when I was walking home one afternoon my mate was walking towards me and there was a ladder over the pavement. I went straight under it but I watched as he waited for all the traffic to pass so he could go round it, he killed himself that night. So no Ive never really understood it all. I do clap my hands when someone says bless you after Ive sneezed but thats just habit. But all this dont walk over 3 drains its bad luck is silly lifes what you make it. Although I do believe in Karma.
Oh bless ya dont be silly loopy. I guess it was his life and he did it for his own reasons. But when I think of him it only brings back good memories so dont you worry about it :-) I forgot to put I also hate these stupid chain txt msgs and e-mails Like the one saying these are 5 money bees send them onto 10 friends and youll have luck with money. Yer right and a blooming big phone bill!! :-)
I'm afraid I'm another 'Good Morning Mr. Magpie - How's the Wife and Children?' person *blush* - but only if the magpie is alone.
Apparently they tend to roam in groups, so seeing one alone is a bad sign. Apparently you can also salute them and say something like 'Hello Captain', but I'd just feel silly.

The 'ladder' superstition, apart from the practical safetly element, comes from the previous centuries when law and order - and punishment - was a lot more instant. A lynch mob could decide to hang some poor indikvidual, and the quickest way to do so would be to bang a ladder against a wall, throw the rope over, and swing the individual. Therefore, anyone walking under the ladder could be seen as trying to save the poor wretch, and may suffer the same fate - thus, walking under ladders is seen as unlucky.
I have no superstitions what so ever - I do walk under ladders if no-one is up them, just because I can.
