Off to Nice in September. Have 25,000 Airmiles. Would like to upgrade on the way back but have spent a fruitless hour on the BA site.
It allows me to upgrade for £89.00 (which I don't want to spend), but everytime I check the 'Upgrade with Avis/Airmiles' it just spins me around and asks me to check in again with my details, although I am already checked in with flight reference and surname.
Driving me crazy. (Or even Miss Daisy.)
Virtually impossible. You'll just have to try to charm them at Nice. There's no way they're going to give upgrades away until the day if the flight as they might sell them.
Apparently air miles are now called 'avios' and it says on the BA website: 'the lowest economy fares (Q, O and G) cannot be upgraded with Avios at any time' so not sure if your flight to nice falls into these catagories. It's only about a 2.5hr flight so I think a bit more leg room and a curtain might be what you get, if anything, for your £89.
you might even be lucky to get much more legroom on a short-haul flight - chances are you'll get one fewer seat in each row and a newspaper, and be allowed to board first. This is something to ask about if you do phone them: what exactly do you get for your airmiles?
You can only upgrade with Airmiles if there are airmiles seats left for sale. If all the airmiles seats are sold then you will not be able to upgrade. For the short hop to Nice I personally wouldn't bother, and I'd save my airmiles for another longer flight.
If you want to use your avios for upgrades you have to pay the full price rather than the economy price on the website. I've stopped trying to use them, they are a complete waste of time
