I heard somewhere recently that this is not the devil's actual number - can anyone tell me the real one? It's for a bet.

Call the bet off - there are loads of numbers all described as representing the devil's number, 6, 616, 666, 9, 1, the list goes on...And nobody's going to know the true number this side of judgement day ! ;-)
the devil's not number 1, heathfield, Sandi Thom is.

the text refers to the number of the "beast" - this is commonly accepted as a term for "the devil" but not explicitly called such and possibly more accurately the anti-christ.

There are also some early greek papyrii that indicate 616.

Of course 668 is the neighbour of the beast but that's not important right now!

I think that Satan is probably clued up about all this 666 business, so if she does return to Earth in human form shell probably ditch the 3 sixes. Instead, look for signs of demonic activity (friends/family members heads turning 360 is usually a dead giveaway), crucifixes catching alight, people close to you dropping dead in obscure ways (speared to death by church steeples or beheaded by panes of glass). Also look out for evil, drooling black dogs and any kids who dont throw their toys out of their pram when they have to go to church.

And there you have it, various signs of the devil. :o)

I heard recently (not sure about the truth) that they got it wrong, and it was upside down, so the true number is 999.

Unfortunately, this means the police are satan

Around the end of the 2nd century, Irenaeus, the bishop of Lyon in Gaul, complained about people he knew who claimed that the number of the beast should be 616 rather than 666.

In the late 1990s, a group of papyrus fragments of the book of Revelation were found among the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, the stash of ancient documents first discovered in Egypt by Bernard Grenfell and Arthur Hunt at the end of the nineteenth century, and which is still being catalogued and compiled today. It appears that a bit of Revelation 13:18 survives in this manuscript. The number of the Beast in that verse very clearly reads as chi iota stigma; that is to say, 600+10+6. All the other manuscripts we possess read chi xi stigma, or 600+60+6.

Did you know that 0.666 is the Number of the Millibeast.

The real name of the Bill Gates is William Henry Gates III. Nowadays he is known as Bill Gates (III), where "III" means the order of third (3rd). By converting the letters of his name to the ASCII-values (which are used in computers) you will get the following:

B I L L G A T E S 3

66 + 73 + 76 + 76 + 71 + 65 + 84 + 69 + 83 + 3 = 666
More on 666 source here
But mr_pointment if you multiply the equation by 3 rather than add the 3 you get 1989 - and that was the year of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

......~~~ spooky ~~~
But the ASCII Value for 3 is 51, so (ignoring the fact this is obviously not true anyway) the logic of this is internally inconsistent.

Gah!
use 5 tables
Numbers do have a significance in the Bible. Seven being perfect. Therefore six is a 'missing of the mark'. Satan, because of his actions against God, will never be perfect, So when the Bible states 666, it is an emphasis on imperfection.
There are some crazy pastors out there that are mixed up and not reading the bible correctly. I believe he/she will come when it comes and no matter how many people say that they have seen and feel the signs of that dark day arriving. Maybe the devil coming to earth is an idea of bad people , such as hitler, swaying us from our religions and faiths and causing pain and destruction.
