I have a Panasonic DMR-BWT740 Blu-ray recorder which is supposed to be a flagship of it`s ilk. I have several videos on USB flashdrive downloaded from U Tube, some of which will play on the recorder, others that won`t play, which show error message "cannot play this file". Likewise, if I try to play some videos on SD memory cards, I get the message "there are no files in the folder", which is completely wrong. It`s a bit of a long shot but maybe there`s someone out there who recognises the problem, as there`s no help whatsoever in the manual. My fingers are crossed!
Thanks.

It is likely that the video files you have downloaded from You Tube are not compatible with your device. I have read reports that it will not read MKV files for example. You may need to convert the files to MP4 for another compatible format.
The videos which won't play seem to have been recorded using codecs which your Blu-ray player can't handle. To make them 'playable' you'll need to convert them to a suitable format. AVC can do the job but you might need to experiment a bit to find a suitable format.

The download link can be found here. (It's safe! I use it myself):

There's also a very brief tutorial. Note that when it says "Select output video format from the drop-down list", clicking to open the list initially only seems to offer Apple formats (for iPhones, etc). However if you look down the left-hand-side of the list you'll see that there are other devices listed there. You need to choose the one which you think is most likely to work. (The 'TV' icon looks promising in your case).
^^^ Minor correction:
It would have been better if the first line of my post read as follows:
"The videos which won't play seem to have been recorded using file types or codecs which your Blu-ray player can't handle".

However my suggested solution remains the same anyway.

I`ve tried all the suggestions here, but still to no avail. However, as all the videos will play perfectly on my laptop, and by connecting the laptop to my TV with a HTML lead, I can now watch everything on the big screen with no hassle.
I`d like to thank all three of you who replied. I`ll probably try again at a later date to solve the problem.
