Mystery 1000 pound

Hi, My Mother In Law has had �1000 credited to her current account, she has phoned her bank (abbey) and they would only tell her that it had come from an account with the same surname (ex-husbands name not family name). Could it be a mistake, and could the bank ask for the money back, and is there any way you could trace the money to find out where it comes from? If anyone has had experience with this, or works in a bank advice ideas would be apprieciated. Thanks all

The legal position is that if the bank deposits money in an account in error the CAN ask for it back.

Personally I'd phone the bank and try and get in writting that the deposit is not a mistake.

have answered in the other section. I dont see how the bank could put it in writing that it is not a mistake, as potentially it is a mistake, by the person who deposited the money!

I gave my answer with context to the original question which said "Could it be a mistake", it might well not be a mistake.

1. The bank shouldn't tell you ANYTHING about where it's come from. That breaches the Data Protection Act.
2. It very likely is a mistake.
3. If it shows on her bank statement as "transfer" rather than "Bank Giro Credit" then it's even more likely to have been a mistake. That'll mean that it's come from another Abbey account and is probably someone trying to transfer money to a relative of theirs.
4. I'd put money on this being done in Bangalore or Pune. Your mother in law's bank statement (once a correction of -�1000 is entered) will show this if you know what to look for.
