over excited dog

my dog is an 8 month old jack russell bitch. she is a great dog and loves other dogs and people, however she does get very excited when someone comes into my house..she gets so excited she jumps up and even nips. i dont mind this reaction but guests and visitors do!! i have tried telling her off ..even shutting her in another room or ignoring her behaviour. nothing works! should i be hitting her when she nips (i hate this idea) but i am at th end of my tether. she is well behaved in all other aspects and a joy to be around but i cant help thinking this puppy like behaviour should have gone by now? anyone got any ideas at all ? x

When anyone, including you enters the house ignore her don't even make eye contact or speak to her. If she is not getting the response from you she wants she should calm down.

to help you there is more to it than just ignore when you walk in the door, if you have never done any training with your dog with a qualified trainer, you won't understand the dynamics that are going on between you and your dog, there is help. Your dog is still puppyish, but really she is a juvenile/teenager. At least until she is 18 months to 2 years. This question has a long response, not enough room on here..check out the website, you'll be glad you did.

thankyou both ..i think the problem is i love the excitement when i come in from anywhere and am usually as excited a she is at being reunited (agh)..i just want the nipping to stop x

Its obvious its you that's the problem. When anyone goes to training classes they don't train the dog they train the owner. Just remember well behaved dogs are like well behaved children you can take them anywhere. You might find that some of your friends will stop visiting if she continues to be too excitable.

thank you very much drgnrdr..i have registered at orangedog and will use it as a source of knowledge for many queries..and yvonne i appreciate it is up to me to train my dog and i always intervene when visitors and friends are involved (i have no intention of losing friends over my excited puppy and none shallow enough to stop calling), however i was just stating and i am sure i will be backed up by dog owners with any emotion that there is nothing better than coming home to your dog who is clearly thrilled at the fact your home and i am not about to ignore this gesture and turn my back x

Nothing says you have to ignore when they are finally trained, but on your terms, just like advised....JRT's are cute and it's hard to ignore the cute factor.

You asked for advice and I gave it. I have kept dogs for over 40 yrs so am very experienced in all kinds of dog behaviour. Continue to enjoy your dog they are brilliant.

i have a choc lab (i know its not quite the same) but training shouldnt be any different but the ignoring thing is the best labs can be quite feisty but ours is now so placid hes like a living door stop and that was by ig noring him when he got over exited and make a fuss when he does something good. :~)
