Nationwide isn't a proper bank, so they probably don't have facilities to handle large quantities of coins.
You can believe my story or not , but this is how I ended up with £6,000 plus in coins.
We used to empty pockets of change at end of day and chuck in a pot.
We then decided to limit this to 20p, 50p, £1 and £2 coins.
Anyway we had a large quality street plastic container and used to fill this up. I would then empty this into a green plastic bin in the utility room when full. Anyway after 5 years we said let's count it. Took one look at the daunting task and figured ....next year maybe.
Anyway mother time ticked and after 9 years it was time to move out of house. So we went to bank and got large rolls of plastic change bags and started the task. Yes we allowed the loose change collecting to get out of control lol.
After a week of counting and bagging coins we had over £6,000.
Damn ....what now ?
So I visited the HSBC bank and then just come in and we will weigh it and put money in your current account.
So I got a small suitcase on wheels and took first £4,000 in.
Two counters and both vacant on a Monday afternoon.
Girl made a funny face and asked if it was bagged and stated to use scales to weigh and count bags of money. After a very short time , less than 30 minutes , she handed me bags that were over or under and we corrected them. She added up total and credited to current account.
I said on leaving and after thanking her several times, I would see he next day with more lol
Next day repeated exercise and counted the other £2,000 plus in coins.
Never again will we do that.
But hey ho ....
I'm a collector and can let things go out of control.
Also being very well paid once does not help my collecting addiction :-)
When we moved house I had almost 75 boxes of ceramics to move I have collected over the last 15 years and dozens of autographed picture , 8 Bakelite radios , 4 Bakelite telephones ......
Anyway that my story on banks accepting change :-)
I should now proof read above ....but can't be bothered , in the same way that AB can't be bothered to add an edit function
